Our Story - made one at a time

we are anne and gary, photographers, collectors, road trippers, and the people behind every canvas you'll find in this gallery.

our collaboration began in 1998 when we founded Gridley+Graves Photographers, though our story started earlier — at Rochester Institute of Technology, where we first met as photography students. we traveled across the country camping and photographing before we had obligations, moved to New York City to start our careers, and married in Connecticut.

after years in New York City — gary working in the art world, anne assisting an editorial photographer in the home furnishings industry — we traded the city for a fixer-upper historic stone house in Pennsylvania along the Delaware River. it was there we decided to build something together, and Gridley+Graves was created.

for nearly three decades we have photographed beautiful homes and spaces for architects and interior designers across the country, and produced stories for publications including Old House Journal, Country Living, House Beautiful, Arts & Antiques, Country Sampler, and many more. we like to say all locations are local for Gridley+Graves. every assignment has taken us down another back road, to another remarkable home, and deeper into our love of American craft, history, and design.

along the way we have collected antiques, styled interiors, arranged flowers, and made photographs. gary approaches every subject — whether a room, a still life, or a garden — with an artist's eye for color and composition. anne brings her editorial precision to every image, and together we create the perfect story, as we have done on every project.

made one at a time grew naturally from that body of work. our first collection — botanical still life — is drawn from our archive of creative photography, including images from our book Window Boxes: Indoors and Out, editorial shoots, and original studio work made in our Pennsylvania home, many featuring antiques from our own collection.

the name says exactly what we mean. gary still works in a darkroom. anne works in the digital realm. but both of us share the same memory — watching an image slowly appear in a darkroom tray, the quiet magic of a photograph coming to life by hand. that feeling never left us. today we print each canvas on an Epson archival wide-format printer and hand-wrap every piece on a wooden stretcher, completing the entire process in our own studio. no fulfillment warehouse. no automated production line. one photograph, one canvas, made by the people who took the picture.

we have always made things with care for the people in our lives — a holiday card, a thank you note to a homeowner who opened their door to us. made one at a time is an extension of that same impulse. we hope these photographs find their way onto your walls and bring some beauty and quiet joy to your home every day.
